KLA-Tencor's ETP program focuses on the company's efforts to become
a "high performance workplace." The worker-retraining plan is in
response to several strategic business initiatives that require
investments in worker education. KLA-Tencor will deliver baseline
High Performance skills for 2,500 technical, engineering, manufacturing,
and administrative employees under a menu curriculum that includes
product knowledge, manufacturing skills, new technology, customer
service, office automation, teamwork and leadership, ISO 9000, statistical
process control, and material resources planning. Today, manufacturers
of advanced integrated circuits require systems capable of measurements
smaller than 0.25 micron (approximately 1/300 the thickness of a
human hair). Consequently, all of KLA-Tencor's current manufacturing,
business, and administrative process are undergoing major changes
to address customer requirements. At the same time, job skills are
a moving target and employees must get the requisite skills training
in order to perform their jobs.
