Founded in 1979, Seagate Technology, headquartered in Scotts Valley, is the worldwide leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of hard computer disc drives, providing products for a wide-range of applications, including enterprise, desktop, mobile computing, and consumer electronics. Computer disc drives have extended their adoption beyond traditional computing to include hand-held media players, digital video recorders for TV, home networks, gaming consoles, PDAs, and media servers, and these new products are fundamentally changing the way people use information. The biggest change for Seagate is there breakthrough in perpendicular recording technology (PRT).
Seagate stands alone in delivering PRT products across desktop, notebook, enterprise, consumer electronics and retail hard drives. This technology represents a shift from a half-century of technological precedent to a new way of recording data to the disk media, standing data bits vertically onto the disc media, rather than horizontal to the surface as with traditional longitudinal recording, to deliver new levels of hard drive data density, capacity and reliability. PRT and the other inventions developed under the company’s technology and manufacturing leadership strategy provide Seagate with a competitive advantage and differentiation in the marketplace but place a heavy burden on worker proficiency. With ETP help Seagate employees will attend a spectrum of skills courses that include advanced technology, continuous improvement, business, management, and computer skills.
